Verbena x hybrida
Verbena is a low, spreading annual that brings a broad ribbon of color to the front of sunny beds. At about 1 foot tall and 2 feet wide, it reads as an edging plant rather than a vertical layer, softening the line between taller plantings and a lawn, patio, or path. Its long bloom period, from late spring into fall, gives a planting scheme a sustained seasonal role.
Use verbena along the outer edge of a border, where its spreading growth can knit the planting together without obscuring plants behind it. Set it back slightly from narrow paths so the mature spread does not narrow circulation or spill into hardscape. It also suits containers, window boxes, and hanging displays, where the low habit can trail over an edge; allow room around the container for its outward growth rather than crowding it with upright annuals.[1]
Plant verbena 18 inches apart, center to center. Each plant can spread to about 2 feet wide, so this spacing is closer than its individual mature width and is best used when you want neighboring plants to form a connected edge or drift. In a mixed bed, reserve a roughly 2-foot-wide band at the front for its mature reach, and keep taller plants behind that band so they retain their own access and light.
Give verbena a full-sun position with good drainage. It fits exposed, bright planting areas where a low-water annual is useful, including the sunny side of a path, a raised bed edge, or a container that will not stay wet after watering. Avoid placing it in low spots that collect runoff or beside plants that need consistently damp soil.
Verbena occupies its fullest visual role from late spring through fall, so leave its front-of-bed space open for the warm-season display rather than depending on it for winter structure. Regular removal of spent flower clusters can help maintain flowering through the season. At season’s end, its space can be cleared and reassigned for the next planting cycle.[1]
