Placement and use
Give American grapes a sturdy arbor, pergola, fence trellis, or purpose-built wire support from the outset. Set the structure along a bed edge, boundary, or sunny sitting area instead of letting the vine roam through shrubs or over a small tree. Keep the fruiting canopy on the accessible side of the support, with a clear path or open working strip beneath it for tying shoots, pruning, and picking. American grape types are notably vigorous, and their training system should be chosen to suit that growth habit.[1]
