Bell pepper is a compact, upright annual vegetable that brings a 2½-foot-tall presence to sunny beds and large containers. Its roughly 2-foot mature spread makes it substantial enough for the middle or back of a vegetable bed, while still fitting neatly into an intensively planted layout. Allow for a warm-season run from planting through a midsummer-to-early-fall harvest, with fruits typically beginning about 75 days after planting.

Give bell peppers a full-sun position with open access from a path or bed edge; regular picking is easier when plants are not buried behind sprawling crops. Use them as a repeating upright row in a rectangular bed, or as individual anchors among lower vegetables. In containers, reserve a generously sized pot and a location that will not be shaded as nearby summer crops gain height.

Site peppers where they receive direct sun for most of the day and where the soil warms well before planting. Maintain even moisture through the root zone instead of letting plants cycle between dryness and saturation; drip irrigation or a soaker hose keeps water directed to the soil. Well-drained ground suits bed planting, and container-grown peppers need particularly close moisture checks because their root zone is limited.[1][2]
Bell peppers need warm conditions, so hold their space for a summer crop rather than filling it with an early planting that will be slow to clear. Set transplants out only after nights are reliably above 50°F and the soil has warmed. Expect the bed to remain occupied through the main summer season; harvest begins in midsummer and can continue into early fall. Provide short stakes, cages, or other modest support before branches become laden with fruit.[1][2]
Avoid squeezing plants into narrow interior rows where mature foliage blocks routine picking or irrigation checks. Prolonged cool weather can slow growth, while dry soil and intense heat can reduce flower and fruit performance. In very hot locations, a site with late-afternoon relief can help moderate heat exposure, but retain the strong overall sun needed for productive growth. Keep peppers out of the same rotation area used recently for tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, or tomatillos.[1][2]
