Blanket Flower is a compact, long-flowering perennial for hot, dry-looking border areas. Its roughly 2-foot height and width make it substantial enough to read as a repeated mid-border plant without blocking lower edging or spilling far into a path. Daisy-like flowers carry the display from early summer into fall, while the plant’s full-sun, low-water character suits open beds rather than sheltered, moisture-retentive corners.
Place blanket flower where it receives full sun and where its 2-foot outline can soften the front half of a border, run alongside a walk, or form small repeated groups in a dry planting. Keep it behind low groundcovers and edging plants, but ahead of taller perennials so flowers remain visible. Leave a reachable edge from a path or open side of the bed: regular deadheading helps extend the flowering display, and access avoids compressing neighboring plants during cleanup.
Set plants 18 inches apart, center to center, for a linked planting that fills in as the roughly 2-foot-wide clumps mature. In a narrow border, reserve at least a 2-foot-deep planting band so foliage and flower stems stay inside the bed rather than leaning into circulation space. For a looser, individually defined look, increase the gaps slightly and repeat the plant in small clusters.
Use blanket flower in full sun with a low-water planting scheme. Give it a position that drains freely rather than a basin beside downspouts, lawn runoff, or heavily irrigated neighbors. Good drainage is especially important for carrying plants through winter; poorly drained clay and prolonged wet conditions can lead to losses.[1][2]
The flowering season begins in early summer and can continue into fall, making this a useful bridge between early-summer perennials and later-season border plants. Deadhead through the display to encourage continued bloom and keep the planting tidy. When flowers are allowed to fade, the plant may occupy a more informal role in the bed later in the season.
Treat blanket flower as a perennial that may need periodic renewal rather than a permanent structural anchor in the design. It is described as relatively short-lived, so avoid relying on a single specimen to hold a gap between shrubs or long-lived perennials. Repeat it through the bed or leave room for replacement plants if a clump declines.[1][2]
