Canna Lily

Place Canna indica toward the back or center of an island bed, where its height will not hide lower planting. Leave a clear reach-in edge from a path or lawn for watering, grooming, and cutting back spent flower stems. A sheltered, sunny border gives the foliage a calmer backdrop and reduces the need for staking; exposed clumps may need support. Large containers can hold a single plant as a focal point near a patio or entry.^[1][2]

Set plants 2 feet apart, center to center, to build a close, continuous display. Each clump can ultimately occupy roughly 3 feet of width, so avoid pinching it between a path, wall, or woody shrub. In a border, reserve a deeper planting strip than the spacing alone suggests, allowing the leaves to project into the bed without narrowing circulation. Keep lower plants in front far enough away to remain visible as the canna fills out.

Give canna lily full sun and regular water, especially when its large foliage is actively growing. It suits beds that can be kept evenly supplied with moisture rather than dry, neglected edges. For a rain-garden-style planting, use it in the planted zone rather than assuming it will suit every wet condition; ordinary garden selections also grow well in well-watered sunny ground.^[2][3]

The display is most useful from summer into early fall, when flowers rise above the foliage and the clump has its greatest visual weight. Remove fading flower stems to extend the flowering display. Where winter frost damages the top growth, plan access to lift and store rhizomes in a frost-free place, or allow enough open bed space for autumn cleanup and winter protection.^[1][2]
