Placement and use
Give Ceanothus a prominent position in a full-sun shrub border, on a slope, or along the open side of a terrace where its broad outline has room to develop. Set it behind lower perennials or groundcovers so the blue bloom is visible above the front of the bed. A single plant can anchor a dry planting; in a repeated row, keep the shrub line back from paths so mature branches do not narrow circulation. Avoid placing it where routine irrigation for nearby plants will keep the root zone wet.[1]
