Anthriscus cerefolium
Chervil is a fine-textured annual herb that earns its space in the cool, quieter parts of the kitchen garden. Reaching about 18 inches tall and 12 inches wide, it can soften the front or middle of a bed without becoming a bulky visual barrier. Its brief spring-to-early-summer harvest window makes it best treated as a seasonal planting rather than a permanent anchor.
Set chervil where a nearby path, bed edge, or container rim makes small, frequent harvests easy without stepping into the planting area. A lightly shaded location helps it fit beside taller crops or on the east side of a structure, provided it still has open soil around its base. Direct sowing suits its short seasonal role, and small repeat plantings can keep the bed from emptying all at once.[1][2]
Space plants 9 inches apart, center to center, for a close leafy row that still allows individual plants to develop. Although each plant can reach about 12 inches wide, that tighter spacing works well for a short-lived annual crop; reserve a reachable edge or narrow access strip for weeding and harvesting. In a mixed bed, keep taller or spreading neighbors from overtaking this low, delicate canopy.
Use partial shade, especially where midday heat builds against paving, walls, or the south side of taller plants. Keep moisture regular in well-drained soil so the root zone does not swing between dry and saturated conditions. A bed that is easy to water evenly is more useful than a hot, exposed position that demands constant rescue irrigation.[1][2]
Sow for a cool-season run in spring or fall, then plan to clear or replant the space as warm weather arrives. Chervil reaches harvest in about 45 days, with the main harvest period running from spring into early summer. Follow it with a later-season crop, or leave room for successive small sowings rather than committing a large bed section at one time.
Chervil is prone to bolting, so its leafy phase can end quickly as conditions turn hot. Avoid placing it in the hottest, most reflective section of the garden or behind plants that will make harvest access awkward later in the season. Treat flowering and the resulting loss of leaf production as the signal to transition that planting pocket to its next use.[2]
