Livistona chinensis
Chinese Fan Palm is an evergreen architectural palm for warm-climate beds, sheltered patios, and large containers. Its broad, drooping fan fronds create a fountain-like outline that needs visual breathing room rather than a crowded mixed border. At roughly 25 feet tall, it works best as a vertical anchor behind lower planting or as a single focal point where its crown can remain clear of roofs, lighting, and regular foot traffic.
Place Chinese Fan Palm where its crown can rise above surrounding shrubs without blocking a path, gate, or patio seating area. Partial sun suits it well, making it useful at the bright edge of a building or beneath a light, open canopy. A sheltered patio position can emphasize its tropical form while reducing exposure around the broad fronds. In containers, allow enough surrounding clearance to move the pot and reach the root zone for watering.
Plant on 10-foot centers when repeating Chinese Fan Palm in a design, but reserve about 12 feet of lateral room for each mature crown. Avoid treating young, trunkless plants as permanent groundcover: their eventual spread requires long-term separation. Keep the planting center well back from walls, fences, and paths so fronds do not overhang circulation routes or press into structures as the palm fills out.[1]
Use a partial-sun position and provide moderate water, with soil that drains well after irrigation or rain. The palm is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 9 through 11, so reserve it for landscapes where winter conditions fit that range. Its broad crown is most useful where nearby plants do not depend on uninterrupted overhead light.
In Florida, manage fruiting plants carefully and remove unwanted seedlings promptly, particularly near natural areas. Mature plants can carry persistent dead lower fronds that may need manual removal, so leave a maintenance approach around the trunk rather than boxing it into a narrow bed. Avoid trunk injuries during pruning, transplanting, or nearby construction work.[1]
