Ternstroemia gymnanthera
Cleyera is a glossy evergreen shrub that brings a dense, year-round presence to partially shaded planting areas. Bronze new growth gives the foliage a changing surface without interrupting the screening role. At about 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide, it belongs in a plan as a substantial background shrub rather than a narrow foundation filler. Its mature scale suits privacy planting, boundary beds, and large mixed borders.
Use cleyera to close a view along a property edge, soften a fence, or form the taller layer of a deep bed. Keep its broad form behind lower shrubs and perennials so it does not crowd a path or conceal smaller plantings. For a continuous hedge or screen, align plants in a simple row and reserve access on at least one side for occasional shaping and inspection. Its evergreen canopy also makes it useful where a bed needs visual structure in every season.
Set plants 8 feet apart, center to center, when planning a full-size hedge or repeating screen. Each shrub can occupy roughly an 8-foot-wide portion of the bed at maturity, so leave the planting line well back from walks, drive edges, doors, and windows. In a mixed border, give the shrub enough depth that its canopy can develop without pressing into the foreground planting zone.
Place cleyera where it receives partial shade and where the soil drains well while retaining moderate moisture. An acidic planting area fits its needs; avoid treating it as a choice for persistently wet ground. Group it with plants that can share the same moderate watering pattern, rather than placing it at the dry outer edge of an irrigation zone.
The glossy evergreen foliage keeps the screen visually occupied through winter. New leaves emerge with bronze to reddish tones before deepening to green, while foliage may take on bronze color in winter. Small creamy-white flowers appear in spring, followed by fruits that mature toward red in fall; plan for foliage and form, not a showy floral display.[1]
Avoid exposed full-sun positions where winter leaf scorch can become a concern, especially at the edge of an open lawn or reflective paving. Poor drainage is also a limiting condition, so do not use cleyera to fill a low spot that stays wet after rain. Its slow growth allows a screen to remain orderly, but also means gaps take time to fill if plants are spaced too widely.[1]
