Corylus avellana
Contorted filbert is a deciduous focal shrub grown for its dramatically twisted stems, which become especially visible after leaf drop. At about 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide, it has enough scale to anchor a small bed or punctuate a larger border. Use it where its branching can be seen from indoors, from a regularly used path, or against a simple background rather than crowded into dense planting.
Give this shrub a prominent, open position near a patio edge, entry walk, porch, or bend in a path, while keeping its mature canopy out of the walking line. It works best as a single accent with lower plants kept back from the base, so the contorted trunk and branches remain legible. Place it behind low perennials or groundcovers rather than among shrubs of similar height, and allow a clear viewing angle for its bare winter framework.

Avoid placing it where a larger neighboring canopy will steadily deepen the shade as it matures. A bed with reachable irrigation or a nearby hose route makes it easier to provide even moisture without crossing paths or compressing the root zone.
Late winter to early spring bloom overlaps with the season when the twisted branches are most exposed, making this a strong plant for a view that remains interesting outside the main growing season. Foliage fills the outline through the growing season, while fall is the harvest period. Keep its winter sightline open when planning nearby deciduous perennials and seasonal cutback areas.
Allow access around the base for removing root suckers if they appear. Many plants are grafted, and suckers from below the graft can grow without the distinctive contorted form, so leaving a narrow inaccessible gap behind the shrub can complicate maintenance. Site it where selective removal of damaged or unwanted shoots can be done without disturbing adjacent plants.[1]
