Coontie Palm

Use coontie palm near the front or middle of a shrub border, where its 3-foot height will not hide lower edging plants or spill into a path. It can anchor foundation beds and broad mass plantings, with taller shrubs or small trees set behind it to preserve light and reach-in access. Leave a clear maintenance strip between the planting and walls, steps, or walkways so the stiff fronds remain contained within the bed.^[1]

Plant on 3½-foot centers for a connected groundcover effect. Each mature plant can occupy about 4 feet of width, so neighboring clumps may meet and visually knit together as they fill in. For a looser, individually defined arrangement, keep the same center-to-center rhythm but reserve open bed area at the outside edge; avoid narrowing the bed below the plant’s mature spread.

Place it in partial sun and in soil that drains freely, rather than in a low spot that stays wet after rain. Sandy or organically amended, well-drained bed soil supports the underground growth habit without requiring a heavily irrigated planting scheme. Once established, organize watering around its low-water role and keep thirstier plants on a separate irrigation zone when possible.^[2]

The evergreen fronds hold the planting together year-round, so coontie palm works well where a bed needs winter occupancy rather than a seasonal gap. Its slow, clumping habit favors stable layouts: give each plant its intended footprint from the start instead of relying on frequent reshaping to maintain circulation or edge clearance.^[2]
