Cowpea is a heat- and drought-tolerant annual legume for the productive summer garden. At about 2 1/2 feet tall and 2 feet wide, it can fill a low to mid-height bed layer while contributing a dense seasonal presence. Use it where its summer harvest window, from summer into early fall, can follow earlier crops or occupy an otherwise open warm-season bed. Its flowers also add pollinator-friendly activity to the vegetable plot.

Give cowpea a defined bed edge or row with a path close enough for repeated picking and for checking the foliage as plants fill in. Bush selections suit an open block or broad row; vining selections need a sturdy trellis or other support placed at the back of the planting area so stems do not spill into circulation space.

Plan a clear changeover after the crop is finished, whether that means opening the space for a fall planting or removing plants before they set unwanted volunteer seed.
Growth habit varies among varieties: cowpeas may be bush, semi-vining, or vining. Confirm the chosen variety before finalizing a support-free layout, because vining plants need more room and access than bush types. The crop is frost-sensitive and depends on warm soil and warm air, so do not assign its bed to an early cool-season planting slot.[1][2]
