Deutzia gracilis
Deutzia is a compact deciduous shrub that reaches about 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide. White bell-shaped flowers cover it from late spring into early summer, bringing a brief but conspicuous seasonal display to shrub borders. Its low, spreading outline suits the front-to-middle zone of a mixed planting, where taller shrubs or a wall will not crowd its canopy.

The mature spread is about 4 ft (1.2 m), so neighboring plants just meet at maturity without crowding.
Treat 3.5 ft as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Use Deutzia along foundations, at woodland-edge transitions, or in a broad border where its 3-foot height will not hide lower planting layers. Keep its widest side facing open bed space rather than a narrow walk, and reserve a reachable edge for pruning. A single plant can soften a corner; repeated plants can form a loose, informal line without making a clipped hedge.
Set plants 3½ feet apart, center to center, for a connected planting with modest overlap as they fill out. Each shrub can spread to about 4 feet wide, so do not treat the spacing distance as a clearance zone. Leave extra room beside paths, steps, and doors if mature branches would project into circulation space, and avoid squeezing it between larger shrubs.
Place Deutzia in full sun and plan for moderate watering, especially while it establishes and during dry stretches. A moist but well-drained planting area supports its growth without placing the root zone in standing water. In a foundation bed, position it where roof runoff will not repeatedly saturate the soil.[1][2]
The shrub carries its main ornamental weight in late spring and early summer, then remains as green deciduous structure through the growing season. Prune soon after flowering, rather than cutting it back late in the season, so the work can be scheduled from an open bed edge. Allow enough access to remove older or dead stems without stepping through neighboring perennials.[1]
Late spring frost can damage the flowering display, so avoid exposed frost pockets where possible. In hot, intensely sunny sites, foliage may look bleached; use a location with dependable moisture and avoid reflected heat from large paved surfaces. Its winter framework is leafless, so do not rely on it for year-round screening.[1][2]
