Distylium spp.
Distylium is an evergreen shrub that brings a steady, full-bodied presence to a planting through every season. At roughly 6 feet tall and wide, it suits a foundation corner, broad mixed border, or low-to-medium hedge where its mature outline can remain undisturbed. Its late-winter to early-spring bloom period adds interest before much of the garden has filled in, while the foliage keeps the space occupied year-round.
Use Distylium to anchor the back or middle of a deep bed, keeping lower plants in front where they will not be overtaken by its eventual bulk. A repeated row can organize the edge of a property or soften the base of a structure, but leave a service strip between the shrubs and walls, fences, or paths for pruning and inspection. Its evergreen habit makes it especially useful where a bed needs structure rather than a seasonal gap.[1]
Set plants 5 feet apart, center to center, for a connected hedge or grouped planting. Each shrub can mature to about 6 feet wide, so this spacing allows neighboring plants to meet and overlap slightly rather than leaving a permanent gap. For individual specimens, reserve a clear 6-foot-wide footprint and avoid crowding the outer edge with plants that need their own long-term sun or access.
Place Distylium in full sun and give it moderate water while it establishes. A bed with good drainage is the safer choice, particularly where irrigation, roof runoff, or heavy soil can keep the root zone wet for extended periods. Keep mulch pulled back from the stems and shape the grade so water does not collect at the base of the shrub.[1]
The foliage holds the planting together through winter, so allow for its full footprint even when surrounding perennials are dormant. Flowers appear from late winter into early spring. If a more compact outline is wanted, make any light shaping after flowering; this preserves the seasonal display and lets new growth define the shrub for the rest of the year.[1]
Distylium is best given its final space from the start rather than treated as a short-term filler. Avoid placing it where a narrow walk, gate swing, utility access, or wall leaves no room for a 6-foot-wide mature shrub. In sites with a history of Phytophthora root rot, choose a different location or shrub rather than relying on this plant as the main evergreen structure.[1]
