Dwarf Burford Holly

Use Dwarf Burford Holly to draw a continuous, evergreen line along a property edge, foundation bed, or broad border. Its dense habit suits informal groups as well as a clipped low hedge, but keep the spiny foliage back from narrow paths, gates, and places where people brush past the planting. Set it behind lower perennials or in a bed deep enough to let its rounded form develop without spilling into circulation space.

Space plants 6 feet apart, center to center, for a connected hedge or closely knit group. Each shrub can ultimately occupy roughly an 8-foot-wide footprint, so allow the outer edge of the bed to extend well beyond the planting centers. Along a walk or driveway, reserve extra clearance for the mature canopy rather than placing the centers at the hard edge.

Place this holly in full sun, where its form will read clearly as a hedge or individual mass. Water needs are moderate, so avoid designing it into a bed intended to stay either dry for long periods or consistently wet. Give it well-drained ground and use a protected position where cold wind is a recurring concern.^[1][2]

Spring brings small flowers, followed by red berries that can remain visible through winter. The evergreen canopy keeps the hedge or border occupied in every season, making it useful where a bed would otherwise look open after herbaceous plants die back.
