Pisum sativum
English pea is a cool-season annual vine that reaches about 3 feet tall and 1 foot wide. Grow it as a vertical spring crop, with support in place before the stems begin to lengthen. Its late-spring to early-summer bloom and harvest window makes it useful for filling a bed early, then opening that space for a later crop after the vines are removed.

The mature spread is about 12 inches (30 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a closed canopy over the bed.

Set English peas along a trellis, fence panel, or netting at the back or north side of a vegetable bed so the climbing growth does not shade shorter crops. Keep the support line close to a path or bed edge: pods are easier to pick when both sides of the row can be reached without stepping into the planting area.
Plant on 3-inch centers along the support line, then reserve a planting band about 1 foot deep for the mature foliage and tendrils. This close spacing makes a narrow vertical row rather than a single broad clump. Allow clear working room on the path side for sowing, guiding stems onto the support, watering at soil level, and repeated harvesting as pods mature.
Use a full-sun position with soil that drains well. Keep moisture even through the growing period, especially in a dry spring; soak the soil rather than wetting the vines, and aim for roughly 1 inch of water a week when rainfall does not supply it. A mulch layer can help hold soil moisture and keep the narrow row easier to manage.[1][2]
Sow early, once the soil has thawed and can be worked, so the roughly 65-day crop develops before hot weather arrives. Peas grow well in cool conditions, with young plants tolerating light frost. Plan the trellis and access route before planting, since flowering and pod set can be damaged by a late frost even after the vines are established.[1]
Treat this as a short-term spring occupant rather than a summer screen. Peas can stop growing and fail to flower or set pods once temperatures rise above 85°F, so a warm, exposed bed may clear earlier than expected. Leave the trellis removable or plan the next crop around it after the pea vines finish.[1]
