Fava bean is an upright annual vegetable that earns its space early in the growing season, then clears after its late-spring to early-summer harvest. Reaching about 4 feet tall and 1 1/2 feet wide, it reads as a short seasonal screen rather than a low edging crop. Use it where its height will not shade smaller vegetables, and where pod picking can happen without stepping into the planting.
