Erigeron speciosus
Fleabane is a compact perennial for bringing lavender, yellow-centered daisies into sunny borders from late spring through midsummer. At about 2 feet tall, it has enough presence for the middle of a bed without blocking lower plantings at the front. Its pollinator-friendly flowers suit informal cottage-style planting and dedicated pollinator borders, while its perennial habit gives the planting area a recurring role each year.
Space Fleabane 12 inches apart, measured center to center (30 cm).
The mature spread is about 18 inches (45 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a solid mass.
Treat 12 inches as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Set fleabane where it receives full sun and can be viewed from a path, patio edge, or the front side of a mixed border. Use it in repeated pockets or small drifts rather than as a single isolated plant, allowing the daisy-like flowers to read as a connected color layer. Keep it in front of taller summer perennials and behind low edging plants. Leave a reachable edge beside the group so spent flowers can be removed without stepping into the planting.
Plant on 12-inch centers for a close, continuous planting rhythm. Each plant can reach about 18 inches wide, so neighboring clumps will knit together as they mature; reserve the full width rather than treating the center spacing as an open gap. Along a path or bed edge, hold the first row back enough to prevent the mature foliage and flowers from narrowing circulation. A group two or three plants deep gives the display more visual weight than a single row.
Give fleabane a full-sun position with moderately moist conditions and soil that drains well. It performs best when moisture is reasonably even rather than swinging between prolonged saturation and drought. Avoid low spots that stay wet, and keep fallen leaves from collecting around the crown, especially where nearby trees shed heavily. A sunny, open bed also makes it easier to keep the clump accessible for routine grooming.[1]
The main floral display runs from late spring into midsummer, so use fleabane to bridge the gap between spring bloomers and later summer perennials. Deadheading can encourage additional flowers, making easy access particularly useful in a dense border. After its bloom period, let surrounding plants carry the visual emphasis rather than relying on fleabane as the bed's sole late-season feature.[1]
