Myosotis sylvatica
Forget-me-not brings a low, soft-edged drift of tiny blue flowers to partly shaded planting areas from mid spring into early summer. At roughly 9 inches tall and wide, it reads best as a close-knit foreground layer rather than a stand-alone accent. Use it where regular moisture is practical and where its spring display can fill open ground beneath taller plants or along a shaded bed edge.
Set forget-me-not beside woodland-style paths, in moist borders, or at the front of a partly shaded bed. Keep it inside the bed rather than letting the planting line spill across a narrow path; its fine flowers are most effective when viewed in a broad patch from nearby. Position taller perennials, shrubs, or structural plants behind it so this low planting remains visible during its bloom season.
Plant on 6-inch centers for a quickly connected carpet, while allowing for individual clumps to mature about 9 inches across. In a mixed border, reserve a band at least 12 to 18 inches deep so the planting has enough visual weight without crowding the next layer. Leave a reachable edge from a path or stepping point for editing seedlings after flowering.
Give this plant partial shade and regular water, especially in beds that dry around the roots of shrubs or along foundations. A moist border or woodland-edge planting is a more dependable fit than a hot, exposed strip beside paving. Group it with plants that can share the same regularly watered zone rather than placing it at the dry outer edge of a bed.
Its main role is spring to early-summer color, so plan for later foliage and flowers to carry the bed once the blue display fades. It can act as a temporary living layer around emerging spring plantings, then give way visually to taller summer growth behind it. The compact height keeps sightlines open near paths and entry beds.
This is a short-lived planting that can return by self-sowing, so give it a place where a few new seedlings will be welcome rather than disruptive. Avoid using it as a tightly controlled geometric edging or beside delicate, slow-to-establish plants that need bare soil around them. Remove spent flower clusters where you want to limit its spread into adjacent planting zones.[1][2]
