Spiraea x bimelda
Goldmound Spirea is a mounding deciduous shrub grown for bright gold foliage and pink flower clusters from late spring into early summer. Reaching about 3 feet tall, it brings a low, rounded layer to a border without blocking views across the garden. Its foliage provides a clear color contrast around darker-leaved shrubs, green perennials, or broad drifts of flowering plants.
Use Goldmound Spirea near the front or middle of a sunny mixed border, where its rounded outline can soften the base of taller shrubs. It also suits foundation beds, low hedges, grouped plantings, and the planted side of a walkway. Keep its mature spread back from the hard edge of paths so growth does not narrow circulation. A repeated row can make a bright, continuous band while still leaving access for pruning and cleanup.[1][2]
Plant on 3-foot centers for a connected planting. Each shrub can spread about 4 feet wide at maturity, so plants at that distance will grow into one another rather than remain as separate mounds; use this spacing for a full border edge or low hedge. For individually outlined specimens, allow closer to the full 4-foot width and leave a reachable gap from walls, paths, and neighboring shrubs.
Give it a full-sun position and moderate water, with soil that drains well while holding some consistent moisture. Place it where the root zone can be watered without routinely wetting a walkway or crowding plants with sharply different moisture needs. A sunny open bed also keeps the foliage color and flower display visually prominent.[1][2]
The pink flower clusters arrive from late spring into early summer, while the gold foliage carries the planting beyond the bloom window. Flowers form on new growth, so any structural pruning belongs in late winter to early spring, before the season’s display develops. Removing faded flower clusters can encourage another flush of bloom and keeps a formal border edge tidier.[1][2]
Allow room at the outer edge of the planting for occasional spread beyond the original mound. This shrub may self-seed and can produce suckers, so it is better placed where seedlings can be noticed and removed during routine border maintenance. Avoid treating a tightly packed planting as permanently fixed; leave an accessible side for inspection and renewal pruning.[1][2]
