Gooseberries are thorny, perennial fruit shrubs that bring a compact berry crop to gardens in Zones 3 through 7. At about 4 feet tall and wide, they suit the middle or back of an edible border, where their spiny branches will not overhang a frequently used walk. Early-spring bloom gives way to sweet-tart berries from early to midsummer.

The shrub occupies its space year after year, so do not rely on its footprint for rotating annual crops. Leave enough room to reach around the plant during the fruiting season without brushing through thorny growth.
Check local rules before planting, particularly where five-needle pines are nearby. Ribes species can participate in the life cycle of white pine blister rust, and restrictions still apply in some parts of the United States. Where that concern is relevant, choose a resistant cultivar and avoid placing the shrub near susceptible pines.[1][3]
