Nandina domestica 'Harbour Dwarf'
Dwarf heavenly bamboo is a compact perennial shrub that makes a low, foliage-led layer in planting plans. At about 2 feet tall and 2½ feet wide, it holds the front or middle of a shrub border without obscuring windows or taller background plants. Its red-orange seasonal foliage gives a small bed a visible color shift beyond the late-spring to early-summer bloom period.
Use this shrub as a low hedge, foundation planting, or repeated mass along the bed side of a path. Keep it behind ground-hugging edging and in front of taller shrubs, leaving a clear strip between its foliage and paving for circulation and cleanup. It also suits a container where its rounded form can be viewed at close range; place the container where it receives partial sun and can be watered regularly.
Set plants 2 feet apart, center to center, for a continuous low planting. A mature spread of about 2½ feet means neighboring plants will lightly overlap as they fill in, so do not crowd the row against walls, paths, or larger shrubs. Allow extra open room at the exposed edge of a foundation bed so the foliage does not spill into the access route.
Choose a partial-sun position with moderate, steady moisture rather than a planting pocket that repeatedly dries out. Well-drained soil is useful for a foundation or border placement, and a humus-rich bed supports a more even planting. In hot exposures, some afternoon shade can help keep the site from becoming overly harsh.[1][2]
Coppery new foliage gives way to green in summer, then develops red, orange, or purple tones in cooler seasons. In warm-winter areas it can remain leafy through winter, while colder winter conditions may leave it semi-evergreen or deciduous. Use it where the planting can still read as a low mass if winter foliage is reduced.[1][2]
This cultivar can widen over time by rhizomes, so retain a little more room than the initial planting footprint suggests and inspect bed edges periodically. Avoid treating a narrow gap between a wall and walkway as permanent planting space. Its winter presence is less dependable toward the cold end of its growing range, especially in exposed sites.[1][2]
