Kale is an upright annual vegetable that reaches about 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide, creating a substantial leafy presence in a food bed. Its sturdy leaves suit repeated picking rather than a one-time harvest, with crops ready in about 60 days and harvests running from spring into fall. Flavor improves after frost, extending its usefulness as surrounding warm-season vegetables begin to clear.

The mature spread is about 2 ft (60 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a closed canopy over the bed.
Treat 18 inches as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Give kale a dedicated strip in a sunny vegetable bed, placing it where the broad leaf canopy will not spill across a narrow path or crowd shorter crops. Site it along the accessible edge of a bed if you expect to pick outer leaves regularly; this keeps harvest traffic out of neighboring planting areas.

Although each plant can spread to about 2 feet wide, this close spacing works best in a block or row with open access from at least one side for harvest and watering. Reserve roughly a 2-foot-wide band for the mature foliage, and avoid tucking seedlings beneath plants that will cast increasing shade as the season progresses.
Use a full-sun position with fertile, well-drained soil, and keep moisture regular rather than allowing the root zone to dry out. Consistent water supports fast, tender leaf growth; heat or moisture stress can make leaves tougher and more strongly flavored. In a raised bed, place kale where irrigation reaches the entire root area without forcing you to water through the foliage of adjacent crops.[1][2]
Plan kale as a cool-season occupant for spring and fall, with a second planting possible in midsummer for fall harvest. It keeps producing through cool weather and tolerates frost, so it can remain in place after more tender vegetables have been removed. Pick outer leaves while leaving the central growth intact to prolong the harvest window and keep the planting useful longer.[1][2]
Do not reuse the same bed for kale or other closely related cole crops year after year. A three- to four-year break before returning kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, collards, mustard, turnips, or rutabagas to that ground helps reduce disease pressure. Mark the bed in the plan so crop rotation remains visible when you redraw the vegetable garden next season.[1][2]
