Okra is a tall, upright annual vegetable that can reach about 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Its strong vertical presence makes it more useful as a back-row crop than as a low edging plant. Expect the planting to occupy the warmest part of the vegetable garden through summer, with harvest beginning around 60 days from planting and continuing from midsummer into early fall.

The mature spread is about 3 ft (90 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a closed canopy over the bed.
Treat 18 inches as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Place okra along the north or west side of a bed when possible, so its height does not cast unwanted shade across shorter crops. Give the row a path-side edge or another open side for frequent picking; pods need attention every 1 to 2 days while they are small and tender.
Space okra plants 18 inches apart, center to center, for a continuous row with each plant holding its own rooted position. A mature plant may spread about 3 feet wide, so reserve a broader working band than the planting interval alone suggests. Keep paths, adjacent rows, and any supports outside the eventual leafy footprint so harvesters can reach pods without pushing through the plants.
Use a full-sun bed with well-drained soil; a site with good organic matter suits the crop well. Okra tolerates dry conditions, but prolonged dry weather can call for deep watering, particularly as flowers and pods develop. Drip or soaker-hose irrigation keeps water delivery at the bed rather than making the crop depend on overhead watering.[1]
Plant after the soil has warmed to at least 65°F at a 4-inch depth, rather than allocating early-spring space to this warm-season crop. The tall canopy is a long summer occupant, so avoid placing it where a later planting will need that same light or circulation. Begin checking for harvest at about 60 days, then pick frequently through the midsummer-to-early-fall season.[1]
