Panicle Hydrangea

Use Panicle Hydrangea at the rear or outer edge of a deep bed, where its broad, upright mass can frame a seating area, soften a fence line, or anchor a mixed shrub border. Keep it far enough from walks, driveways, gates, and windows that the mature canopy will not narrow circulation or block routine access. Place lower perennials and smaller shrubs in front, leaving an open working side for watering, pruning, and removing fallen flower heads if desired.

Space plants 8 feet apart, center to center, to give each shrub its intended footprint and avoid crowding as branches fill out. An individual plant can occupy an area roughly 8 feet across, so reserve a deep bed rather than a narrow foundation strip. In a row, hold the planting line back from paths and structures by several feet to preserve reach-around access and keep the mature canopy out of circulation space.

Give this shrub a full-sun position and plan for regular watering, especially where surrounding paving, walls, or dense neighboring roots make the bed dry more quickly. Set irrigation or a hose-access point before the shrub matures; reaching the root zone is easier when the bed can be approached from at least one side. Keep nearby plants outside its main root and canopy space so watering remains straightforward.

The woody framework is deciduous, so its winter footprint remains while leaves are absent. Flowering occurs on new growth, allowing late-winter pruning before spring growth begins; reserve enough clearance around the base for pruning work. The dry flower heads can remain into winter for seasonal structure, then be removed as part of late-winter cleanup if a tidier outline is preferred.^[1][2]
