Place PJM Rhododendron where it can read as a rounded, year-round mass: along a woodland edge, in a mixed shrub border, or as a low informal hedge. Set it behind shorter perennials or groundcovers so its foliage remains visible after the spring flowers pass. A north- or east-facing exposure, or a bed with morning sun and afternoon shade, helps keep the shrub out of harsh late-day heat. Leave a reachable edge beside paths or bed openings for pruning after bloom and for checking soil moisture.^[1][2]

Space plants 4½ feet apart, center to center, for a closely connected planting that will read as a continuous group while still allowing each shrub room to develop. A mature spread of about 5 feet means the branches can meet or lightly overlap over time. For a looser specimen rhythm, widen the intervals and preserve open mulch or low planting between shrubs. Keep the mature canopy clear of narrow paths, steps, and door swings.

Use a part-sun site with protection from hot afternoon exposure. The planting area should have acidic, organic-rich soil that stays evenly moist but drains freely; avoid low spots where water lingers around the roots. In heavier ground, a raised or gently bermed planting zone can provide the drainage this shrub needs. Maintain a mulch zone beneath the canopy rather than crowding the root area with dense, thirsty plants.^[1][2]

The early- to mid-spring flowers make this shrub especially useful where the garden needs a strong opening display before many summer perennials fill out. Evergreen foliage keeps the planting occupied after bloom rather than leaving a seasonal gap.
