Placement and use
Give a plum the sunniest practical position, away from the north or east side of lower plantings that need full light through the growing season. It works best as an orchard-style anchor at the edge of a lawn, large border, or dedicated fruit area rather than within a narrow mixed bed. Leave a clear route from a path or open ground to the trunk so watering, pruning, fruit picking, and fallen-fruit cleanup do not require stepping through surrounding plants.
