Dasiphora fruticosa
Potentilla is a tough, deciduous shrub that makes a compact flowering layer rather than a tall screen. Its yellow flowers carry the planting from late spring into early fall, giving a low border or foundation bed a long season of color. At roughly 3 feet tall and wide, it fits comfortably between ground-level perennials and larger background shrubs without taking over a small bed.
Use Potentilla along sunny walkways, at the front of a mixed shrub border, or in a foundation planting where a low, rounded mass will not block windows or sightlines. It can also be repeated as a short informal hedge, but keep the planting line far enough from paths and bed edges that its mature branches do not narrow circulation. Place it where its long bloom period can bridge the space between spring displays and later-season plantings.[1][2]
Space plants 3 feet apart, center to center, for a continuous low planting that meets at maturity. Each shrub can occupy about a 3-foot-wide footprint, so reserve that full width instead of tucking it into a narrow strip between a wall and a path. In a mixed bed, leave a reachable gap at the rear or sides for pruning and for clearing fallen leaves from surrounding plants.
Give this shrub a full-sun position for its strongest flowering display. A well-drained bed suits it best, especially where winter moisture does not collect around the root zone. Once established, it handles dry conditions well, making it useful in sunny areas that are not regularly irrigated.[1][2]
The flowering season runs from late spring into early fall, so keep it visible from frequently used outdoor areas rather than hiding it behind taller summer growers. Its deciduous framework remains in the bed through winter. Prune in early spring before flower buds develop to neaten the outline and remove winter-damaged growth without sacrificing the coming display.[1][3]
Potentilla is best reserved for cooler-summer settings within its hardiness range. Hot, humid conditions can make the shrub less tidy and more difficult to maintain, so avoid using it as the key structural plant in exposed, heat-reflecting beds in those climates. Where summer conditions are suitable, allow room for periodic renewal pruning as older plants can become ragged.[1][2]
