Ribes rubrum
Red currants are perennial fruiting shrubs for cool-climate gardens, combining an upright 4-foot presence with an early- to midsummer berry season. Their tart, translucent fruit suits a dedicated fruit border, a mixed edible planting, or the outer edge of a shrub bed where the branches remain easy to reach. Early- to midspring bloom also gives this shrub a useful spring role before the harvest season begins.

The mature spread is about 4 ft (1.2 m), so neighboring plants just meet at maturity without crowding.

Place red currants where they receive partial sun and can be watered regularly without crowding neighboring shrubs. A bed edge beside a path is especially useful: keep the harvest-facing side open so fruiting branches can be reached without stepping into the planting.
Set plants 4 feet apart, center to center, and reserve roughly a 4-foot-wide footprint for each mature shrub. In a row, this creates a continuous small-fruit planting rather than broad gaps, so allow access from at least one side for pruning and picking. Avoid placing the row tight against a fence, wall, or bed boundary unless there is room to work around the branches.
Choose a site with partial sun and evenly available moisture, avoiding ground that stays waterlogged. Red currants can also grow in full sun, while light shade is tolerated; hotter summer sites benefit from some afternoon shade. Use a mulched root zone to help conserve soil moisture, but keep the planting area open enough for air to move through the shrub.[1][2]
The shrub occupies its space from spring flowering through early- to midsummer harvest, then remains as a woody framework for the rest of the year. Plan for dormant-season pruning access rather than treating it as a temporary berry patch. Annual thinning of weak or dead canes and canopy opening make a path-side position particularly practical.[1][3]
Before planting, check local rules affecting Ribes species, as restrictions remain in some parts of the United States because currants can participate in the life cycle of white pine blister rust. Do not place red currants near five-needle pines where this disease is a local concern. When selecting a cultivar, favor one identified as resistant where that risk applies.[1][3]
