Kniphofia uvaria
Red hot poker is an upright perennial for bringing strong vertical flower spikes to a sunny border from midsummer into early fall. At about 3 feet tall, it reads best behind low edging plants or among medium-height perennials, where its warm-colored blooms can rise above the surrounding foliage. Its hummingbird appeal makes it a useful feature near a sitting area or a path where flower activity is easy to notice.

Use red hot poker as a repeated accent along the middle or back of a border, rather than tucking a single plant into a crowded front edge. Its upright habit gives the bed a clear vertical rhythm, while the roughly 2-foot-wide base needs open ground around it. Place it where the bloom spikes will not lean into a narrow walkway, and keep a reach-in edge or path nearby for removing spent stems.
Set plants 18 inches apart, center to center, for a close-knit drift. Each clump can reach about 2 feet wide, so neighboring plants will meet and may overlap as the planting fills in; leave extra room at the outer edge of the group rather than crowding it against paving or a bed wall. In a mixed border, reserve the 2-foot footprint before threading smaller plants between the crowns.
Give Kniphofia uvaria full sun and soil that stays moist but drains freely. Moderate watering suits the plant once established, but avoid sites where water remains around the crown or roots after rain. Sandy or loamy planting areas with reliable drainage are more suitable than heavy, wet ground, especially where winter moisture tends to linger.[1][2]
The flowering season runs from midsummer into early fall, so keep its planting space open through late summer rather than allowing taller neighbors to close over it. Remove spent flower spikes after bloom to keep the clump orderly. Old or tired foliage can be cleaned up in mid-spring, leaving the crown accessible as new growth begins.[1][2]
Avoid low pockets, poorly drained clay, and places that collect winter water. In colder exposed positions, give the clump a protected location rather than an open, wind-swept edge. Once established, it is better left in place; plan its long-term footprint before planting instead of treating it as a perennial that will be moved often.[1]
