Placement and use
Place rutabaga in the open middle of a sunny vegetable bed, where its roughly 18-inch height will not shade shorter crops. A block planting makes thinning, watering, and lifting roots simpler than scattering plants through ornamental borders. Keep one side of the planting within easy reach of a path or bed edge so foliage and roots can be checked without stepping into the row. Beans, peas, onions, lettuce, spinach, and chamomile can share the broader plan; keep it apart from strawberries and tomatoes.
