Placement and use
Place salsify in a dedicated root-crop strip or toward the back half of a vegetable bed, rather than in a spot needed for quick succession planting. Keep it beside a path or at the open edge of a raised bed so a garden fork can be inserted well away from the root at harvest. Direct sowing in the final growing position avoids root disturbance; deep containers can also work when they provide enough depth for the developing roots.[1]
