Shallot is a compact bulb-forming allium that makes a tidy, low row in the vegetable garden. Its mild bulbs develop in clusters, so reserve a sunny, well-drained section of the bed rather than a damp edge or a spot shaded by taller crops. Plant sets in fall or early spring, then keep the row easy to weed and reach as it fills its allotted space over roughly 90 days.

The mature spread is about 6 inches (15 cm), so neighboring plants just meet at maturity without crowding.
Treat 6 inches as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Use shallots as a narrow border row, a repeating strip through a raised bed, or a short block beside other low crops. At about 1 foot tall, they stay below most staked tomatoes and larger brassicas, but should be placed where those crops will not cast heavy shade. A path-side row is practical because the plants need regular watering and their compact footprint allows easy hand access without stepping into the bed.

A light mulch can help keep the soil surface from drying quickly while leaving the bulb row visible and accessible.[1]
Plant in fall or early spring, then hold the space through the main growing season rather than treating it as a quick gap-filler. Harvest falls from mid-summer into early fall, so plan nearby successions and bed turnover around that occupancy. When tops begin to dry and fall, ease off irrigation so the bulbs can finish in drier soil before harvest.[2]
Do not rely on a crowded bulb row to hide weeds or compensate for lost planting space. Crowding can distort bulb development, while shallow roots make alliums less competitive with established weeds. In a crop rotation, move shallots away from areas with recent heavy weed seed production and avoid returning alliums to the same ground year after year when the garden layout allows it.[1]
