Oenothera speciosa
Showy evening primrose is a low, spreading perennial groundcover for sunny, dry-leaning parts of the garden. Growing about 1 foot tall and 1½ feet wide, it carries pink cup-shaped flowers from late spring into early fall. Use it where a loose, naturalizing edge is welcome rather than where every plant must hold a crisp outline. It is hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 9.

The mature spread is about 18 inches (45 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a solid mass.
Treat 12 inches as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Give it an open position at the front of a sunny border, along a bank, or across a broad bed edge where stems can wander without covering more restrained perennials. Its low profile leaves sightlines open beside paths, but set the planting back from narrow walkways so spreading growth does not reduce the clear walking width. A naturalized area, slope, gravelly bed, or wide roadside-style strip gives the colony room to read as a continuous groundcover.[1][2]
Plant on 1-foot centers for a quickly connected cover. Each plant can reach about 1½ feet across, so neighboring clumps will overlap as they mature; treat the spacing as a planting grid, not a promise of separate round mounds. Keep an accessible open edge on at least one side of the group for thinning seedlings and redirecting growth away from nearby plants.
Place Showy Evening Primrose in full sun for the strongest flowering display, in soil that drains well after rain. Its low water needs suit sunny banks and other places that are not regularly irrigated. Avoid low spots and heavy, persistently wet ground, where drainage rather than drought becomes the limiting design concern.[1][2]
The flowering season occupies the garden from late spring to early fall, so leave its patch visible from the main viewing side rather than hiding it behind taller summer growth. The plant may go dormant during a dry summer, which can create a temporary opening in a groundcover planting. Use surrounding long-lived structure only where a seasonal gap would be acceptable.[2]
This plant spreads by creeping rootstocks and seed, and it can become assertive in a mixed perennial border. Reserve it for a contained-looking mass only if you are prepared to edit the edge and remove unwanted seedlings. Do not place it immediately beside slow-growing, compact, or carefully spaced plants that could be overtaken as the colony expands.[1][2]
