Skimmia

Use Skimmia japonica in a shaded foundation bed, beneath an open tree canopy, or along a border where its evergreen form can hold the line after herbaceous plants fade. Its dense, mounded habit suits a repeated planting beside paths or as a low informal hedge, but keep the planting bed wide enough that its mature branches do not lean into circulation. A site with dappled light is especially useful where brighter planting would scorch or look out of place.^[1][2]

Set plants 3 feet apart, center to center, for a continuous group that closes into a unified evergreen mass. Since each shrub can mature about 4 feet wide, allow the outer edge of the planting to extend beyond those centers and keep paths, walls, and neighboring shrubs clear of that eventual spread. For a single specimen, reserve a roughly 4-foot-wide pocket rather than tucking it into a narrow gap.

Place skimmia in partial shade, ideally with protection from strong afternoon sun. Keep the root zone evenly supplied with moderate moisture, and use a well-drained, humus-rich planting area rather than a dry or compacted pocket. It works well where leaf mold or other organic mulch can remain over the soil surface without crowding the stems.^[1][2]

The evergreen canopy makes this shrub useful as a year-round anchor in beds that otherwise empty in winter. Early- to mid-spring flowers give the planting a seasonal lift before many shade perennials fill out. If winter berries are part of the plan, include a compatible male pollinator near female plants and leave enough room for both plants to mature without one being hidden behind taller shrubs.
