Placement and use
Set Mertensia virginica where its early-season display can be enjoyed from a path, entry walk, or seated view, but do not rely on it to hold a bed together through summer. Use it in groups through a moist, shaded border or woodland bed, leaving room for ferns to occupy the space later in the season. Avoid placing it as the sole foreground plant along a highly visible edge, since the foliage disappears after its spring run.[1][2]
