Wineberry

Rubus phoenicolasius

Wineberry is a perennial bramble that makes a substantial, informal shrub mass, reaching about 6 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Its bristly canes and bright red summer fruit suit it to a contained edge rather than a small mixed border. Give it a position where its size, prickly growth, and yearly cane management will not interfere with routine movement through the garden.

Placement and use

Wineberry is invasive in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia, and should not be planted there. Where it is allowed, set it at the outer edge of a dedicated fruit area, with a clear working side for pruning, tying in, and harvest. Keep it back from paths, gates, play spaces, and the fronts of ornamental beds so arching canes do not narrow circulation, and leave room to reach both the base and the ends of the canes.^[1][2]

Spacing and mature footprint

Plant on 4-foot centers, then reserve the wider 6-foot mature spread for the planting’s eventual canopy and cane sweep. In a row, do not treat the center-to-center interval as a path: maintain a separate access lane beside the row for cutting out spent canes and collecting fruit. Avoid tucking lower perennials into the shrub’s intended footprint, where they would become difficult to reach.

Sun, water, and soil

Use a full-sun position and provide moderate, steady water. Place it where watering can be delivered without routinely soaking adjacent paths or crowding other plants. Its 6-foot scale makes it better suited to the back or outside edge of a sunny planting than to a narrow foundation bed.

Seasonal notes

Flowers arrive from late spring into early summer, followed by a mid- to late-summer harvest period. The root system persists while individual canes follow a two-year cycle: new canes grow one year, then flower and fruit the next before dying back. Keep the planting accessible after harvest, when spent fruiting canes need to be removed and new growth needs room to develop.^[1]

Planning caveats

Treat wineberry as a high-containment planting rather than a casual shrub. It can form dense thickets and spread when cane tips contact soil and through root buds, and birds and other animals carry its seed well beyond the planting, so careful siting alone will not keep it out of nearby woods, stream margins, or natural areas. Check state restrictions before planting, remove seedlings and wandering canes promptly, and consider raspberries or blackberries instead.^[2][3]
