Winter Gem Boxwood is a compact evergreen shrub that brings year-round structure to beds and garden edges. At about 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide, it has enough presence for a low formal hedge, a repeated border rhythm, or a shaped focal point without becoming a large screening shrub. Its green winter foliage helps hold the outline of the garden when surrounding perennials have died back.

Use Winter Gem Boxwood to define the front or middle of a shrub border, flank an entry, or draw a crisp line beside a patio or path. A single plant can be clipped as topiary, while a repeated row makes a formal hedge with a consistent, walkable edge. Keep the planting line far enough from walls, steps, and paving that the shrubs can be trimmed from both sides; where only one side is accessible, reserve the other side for a less formal, unshorn outline.
Set plants 3½ feet apart, center to center, for a hedge that can grow into a continuous green run. Each shrub can ultimately occupy roughly a 4-foot-wide space, so this spacing allows the outer growth to meet while keeping the row legible in the plan. For an individual specimen, leave the full 4-foot spread clear of neighboring shrubs, path edges, and structures rather than relying on frequent pruning to solve crowding.
Place this boxwood in full sun and give it moderate water, particularly while it establishes. Well-drained soil is important: avoid low pockets where water lingers around the roots. A 1- to 2-inch mulch layer over the root zone helps conserve soil moisture, but keep mulch away from the stems and avoid routine digging or cultivation immediately around the plant.[1]
The evergreen canopy keeps hedges and clipped forms visually active through winter, making it useful where a bed needs a permanent framework. In colder parts of its range, site it away from exposed winter wind and intense winter sun. A sheltered position near a wall, fence, or taller planting can reduce the risk of foliage bronzing without turning the hedge into an inaccessible strip.[1]
Allow enough room between a boxwood row and adjacent plantings for annual thinning, removal of damaged branches, and air movement through the hedge. Do not use it as the lowest point in a poorly drained bed, since root rot is more likely where soil stays wet. For tightly clipped designs, preserve a maintenance strip along the planting so shearing does not require reaching across other shrubs or perennials.[1]
